Teaching Kids How to Keep Safe From Fire
Fire Prevention Coloring Books

Out of all the things we can teach kids, fire prevention and fire safety is one of the most important. Schools everywhere teach fire safety, but it's important to reinforce this knowledge at home on a regular basis. Here is an overview of some of the key principles of fire safety.

The single most important point is to always use smoke detectors. It is a little known fact that the vast majority of fire fatalities result from smoke inhalation, not from burns. Because of that it is very important to put smoke detectors on every floor of your house and around the sleeping areas. You need as much warning time as possible. But it is very very important to check every smoke detector at least once each month to double check that they are working properly. And even though the smoke detector may still currently work, make sure to put in new batteries at least once a year to avoid surprise outages.

The second critical element of fire prevention and safety is to make a family evacuation plan. necessary to have a home escape plan as well. The key motto is to "Be Prepared". Prepare a floor plan for your house, and choose at least 2 possible evacuation routes for each room. That gives you an alternative route in case one of them is blocked when you try to evacuate. You should also designate a meeting spot outside and away from your house, and teach your kids to stay at that meeting spot no matter what happens.

One more critical part of fire education is that fire is not a toy and children are not to play with it. Lighters and matches are for adults only. Adults should do their best to keep them out of the reach of children. Children should also be taught to avoid tossing things into the fire place and touching lit candles.

Those are a small number of the most important fire safety principles that kids have to understand. But there are more. You should check with the local municipality and fire department for more comprehensive information. On top of that there are many online information sites that can be quickly and easily accessed from your own home. Just make sure that the information comes from a credible source.
